Prynne, William

Prynne, William
(1600–69)
   Polemicist.
Prynne was born in Somerset, and he was educated at the University of Oxford. A determined Puritan, he was a prolific pamphlet writer. His Histriomastix, directed against the immorality of playacting, was understood as an attack on the court of King Charles I and, in consequence, Prynne was imprisoned, fined and lost both his ears in the pillory.
He was imprisoned again after campaigning against the Book of Sports, a list of certain recreations which the Church permitted on Sundays. He also did not hesitate to lead the attack against Archbishop laud. He won a seat in the House of Commons in 1648, but he opposed the execution of the King. Subsequently he was imprisoned yet again, this time for attacking Parliament. He was a supporter of the restoration of King Charles II, but his uncompromising Presbyterianism put him out of sympathy with the high Anglicanism of the new reign. However, he continued to write his pamphlets and participate in Parliamentary debates for the rest of his life. Prynne is remembered for his independence of mind, his courage and relentless persistence in promoting what he believed to be right.
